SHOJI By DE PADOVA

Manufacture year: 2023

Type: Cedarwood Screen

Shoji is a cedar screen.‎ Shoji is assembled into a fine lattice using straight grain Akita cedar and finished without paint to bring out the original texture and aroma of the cedar.‎ On one side it is covered with Echizen washi paper from Fukui Prefecture, one of Japan’s top three traditional papers.‎ With a history dating back 1,500 years, Echizen washi is a durable paper that typically comes in large sheets and which is applied seamlessly on the fusuma (sliding doors) and byobu (folding screens).‎ The three panels are joined together by paper hinges glued with washi paper.‎ Using a traditional Japanese process, these partitions are made solely from Akita cedar and Echizen washi paper without any metal fixings.‎ The height of the partition is 1.‎35 metres, slightly lower than standard ones but high enough to remain out of sight when seated in a chair.‎ Despite its modest size, the soft light filtering through the washi paper adds depth to the space.‎ Available with the Japanese paper or only with the frame made of Akita cedar, the elegant tension of the Shoji latticework gives rhythm to the space.‎
